JIMON

Katinka Huang

Interview by Jimon

-Where do you call home currently?  I currently live and work in New York City so that’s home for now.

-How would you describe Katinka?  Curious, clumsy, inappropriate.

- How did you discover art?  Growing up, I had difficulties learning so my parents encouraged creativity, I took art classes every weekend from a very young age. I looked forward to it more than anything else.

- How did you acquire your style?  My style has developed a lot throughout the years but I have always been drawn to morbid subject matters. I study squished animals I come across on the streets. Side note: I do not take them home. Joel Peter Witkin’s photos have heavily influenced the unsettling and absurd nature of my work.

- What do you dream about?   I usually forget my dreams but I’d like to start writing them down because they are seriously bizarre.

-What else interests you besides art?  I can’t say I am any good at it, but I enjoy making all sorts of food in my spare time. Sometimes I feed my friends and family.

- You attend SVA(School of Visual Arts) in New York, why did you choose SVA?  The faculty members are incredibly supportive and they just really care about your career.

- What advice would you give putative collectors?  Acquire what you really love,  don’t let others opinion affect you too much.

- What is the origin of each of your paintings (imagination, inspiration….)?  The female figure is often the central character in my work. My upbringing at an all girls boarding school ignited my interest in examining the enigma and unpredictability of the female psyche. My mixed media figurative paintings uncover a mutilated female psyche by dissecting the genesis of my own trauma as a woman.

- Do you listen to music while creating? If yes, what genre?  It’s funny because It was impossible for me to work without music before I moved to New York but now I have to work in complete silence to stay focused.

- The last piece of art that totally blew your mind?  My friend Lucy Black’s @lucylucyblack recent works. She created collages from her scanned body parts, they are so bloody weird it’s incredible ! Definitely go check out her work.

- If you could live in a museum anywhere in the world, which would it be?  Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles.

- Do you have a place/person/thing that you visit for inspiration?  Not specifically. But I often watch Kate Bush’s music videos when I’m stuck, it always inspires and motivates me to work.

- Who is your dream collaboration?  I would love to collaborate with Tony Oursler one day. That’s the dream.

-Name three things you can’t live without in your studio?  Charcoal, red ink and coffee.

-How would someone find you on Social media?  Instagram @Katinkaworkplace
