Tim Fawcett

Interview by Jimon

1. Where do you currently reside and work?  A tiny island off the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight.

2. How would you describe Tim Fawcett? Complex

3. Did you attend an art school or is it inherent?  Yes, foundation diploma followed by BA(Hons) fine art.

4. How long have you been making art and what lead you to start?  It was the one and only thing I was able to do well as a kid, and learned later that it was the most important form of expression and communication for me personally. Well that and a certain musicality, so I was probably first aware of my direction at around 8 or 9.

5. How did you acquire your style?  I’m still acquiring it – it’s forever boiling down, then shifting sideways, always just chipping away at the coal face – always evolving.

6. Have you ever come across a piece of art that you could not or did not want to stop looking at?  Edvard munch Self-Portrait with Burning Cigarette.

7. Tell us something about the art world that you want to see changed?  I’m not sure about changing the art world per se, but the world’s perception of art through better media coverage and education of art, therefore more broad brushing and levelling of perceived highbrow in the art world.

8. Why make art?  To stay human

9. The future is _________?  Unwritten

10. What is your thought on the following statement; Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable!  Yes it should do both, but also it should ask questions, provoke, challenge, resonate at a level which other forms of language can not.

11. Are the lines and colors in your paintings signify anything or totally random?  How long have you got? I could go on for days! This could of course depend on which painting you’re referring to, as I don’t like to generalise, but I’ll try(!) – I aim to create a fragile balance between both highly considered and the spontaneous visual forms, the two jostle for position sparking visual conversation between the elements. Composition is another important aspect in my work, i.e. balance and movement, positive and negative, concrete and chaos = energy!

12. What advice would you give putative collectors?  Keep an open mind and follow your heart, not your wallet

13. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received in regards to your art?   Be true to yourself, keep going and don’t worry about what people may think.

14. How do you define success? Being alive and doing what I love – painting

15. Do you have a place/person/thing that you visit for inspiration?  I devour images on social media, look up and listen to lyrics playing on my headphones, I can spend hours sometimes getting in the zone before I can paint.

16. If you could have dinner with 3 artists living/dead who would be at your table?   Caravaggio, Cy Twombly and Francis bacon – what a party!

17. Name three things you can’t live without in your studio?  Oxygen, Food, Music

18. How would someone find you on Social Media? Instagram timfawcett_art.
